Elderly New Orleans Man Accused Of Murder After His Fiancée Shot Through Bathroom Door During Fight
A 76-year-old Louisiana man was booked Tuesday on charges of murdering his bride-to-be by shooting her through a bathroom door, according to authorities.
Norman Smith shot his romantic partner of nine years Monday, March 27, New Orleans Police say.
The unidentified 57-year-old woman told police that Smith shot her in the spine after a fight in which he tried to choke her.
The woman was trying to hide in the bathroom when she was shot, she claimed.
The gunshot left the woman paralyzed. She died last Saturday.
Defense attorney John Fuller told a bond hearing Tuesday that Smith apologized to his fiancee before she died.

"I'm glad she was able to know he was remorseful for what he did," the New Orleans Times-Picayune quoted Fuller as saying.
Smith posted bond immediately after the shooting. After turning himself in Monday, he's now being held on $850,000 bond.
