U.S. Allies on High Alert: European Country Readies Plans to Evacuate Citizens Amid Alarm Russia May Invade
A key NATO member, Lithuania, is bolstering its defenses amidst growing concerns of a potential Russian attack, as tensions rise between the West and Moscow, according to a recent report.
Strategically located between Belarus and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad, home to the Kremlin's Baltic fleet, Lithuania has a complex history, having been part of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union before gaining independence in 1991, Express reported.
Lithuania joined both the EU and NATO in 2004, aiming to secure its economic and military future.
However, recent months have seen the Kremlin criticize Lithuania, accusing the country of harboring anti-Putin saboteurs. Belarus has also alleged that Lithuania is allowing its territory to be used for drone attacks on Minsk by anti-Lukashenko activists.
This aggressive rhetoric has sparked fears of a potential future attack on Lithuania, prompting officials to enhance security measures across the country.
Vilnius, the capital, is investing in anti-tank defenses to help repel any attack. Mayor Valdas Benkunskas plans to encircle the city with a defensive ring of anti-tank "hedgehogs," "dragon teeth," and concrete blocks.

"They are primarily needed to block entry into the city by road," Benkunskas explained. "The main roads in the southern and eastern directions, if you look at the external border of NATO. This also includes a network of smaller roads, starting with forest roads, gravel roads, which could be used during an attack on the city."
The specific roads to be blocked were determined in consultation with defense experts and will not be publicly disclosed.

Additionally, city officials are devising plans to evacuate the city within one and a half days.
"The task is to evacuate the city, all residents, in 1.5 days," the mayor stated. "How to achieve this depends on the conditions. As I said, cases of sabotage and deliberate interference are possible. We will have at least five scenarios, depending on specific conditions."
