2-year-old killed in North Carolina on New Year's Eve, suspect arrested

A North Carolina man was charged with killing an infant last month, police said.
Homicide detectives from the Fayetteville, North Carolina, police and U.S. Marshals charged Keshawn Ayers in connection to the murder of a 2-year-old.
Officers responded to reports of an unresponsive child on Malloy Street in Fayetteville around 8:3 p.m. on Dec. 31.
The child was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center but died from his injuries, according to Fayetteville police. At the time of the incident, the victim was in the custody of Ayers, his mother’s boyfriend.
The autopsy determined the manner of death to be homicide. Ayers, 26, was charged with first-degree murder and intentional child abuse inflicting serious injury.
No further details on the extent of the child's injuries were released.
Authorities caught Ayers at the Knights Inn motel, according to The Fayetteville Observer. Records indicate he was booked into the Cumberland County jail and was ordered held without bail.
