Bad Blood: Indianapolis Man Fatally Shot Neighbor Who ‘Kept Running His Mouth,’ Snooped Through Mail, Cops Say
An Indianapolis man is accused of murdering a neighbor he suspected was stealing his mail, authorities said.
According to court documents recently obtained by WXIN, around 6:30 p.m. on March 28, Zachariah Meehan, 25, allegedly fatally shot 64-year-old Thomas Baughman, who died outside his home.
Meehan claimed to police that he began having trouble with Baughman after moving into a nearby residence.
Court documents state Meehan alleged Baughman stole mail from him, once broke into his home and stalked him. He also accused Baughman’s friend of taking some dog food he had on his porch.
The day of the deadly incident, Meehan told police he saw the friend of his neighbor at his mailbox. When Meehan went outside to confront him, he claimed Baughman also exited his home and they got into a dispute.
Meehan said he then shot the Baughman during the altercation out of self-defense, WXIN reported.
Court documents show police charged Meehan with Baughman’s murder at the end of June following an investigation.
In a recorded phone call, police claim Meehan spoke with his girlfriend’s sister and again alleged to her Baughman had gone through his mail and broke into his home. He allegedly said to the sister: “I told him to get off my property or something would happen.”
According to police, he allegedly also said on the call: “He kept running his mouth” and “I pulled the f***ing trigger man, I pulled the f***ing trigger.”
Meehan faces a murder charge. His trial is expected to begin in early fall.
