A New Jersey man is accused of stabbing a 21-year-old to death last weekend, prosecutors said.
Elizabeth police responded to the 300 block of Center Street and found Yonatan Alexander Vasquez-Torres, 21, of Elizabeth, suffering from a serious stab wound around 3:00 a.m. on Oct. 10, according to the Union County Prosecutor's Office. He was pronounced dead on the scene.
Union County Homicide Task Force, along with the Elizabeth Police Department and the Union County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit identified Alexis Mondesi, 48, as the prime suspect and arrested him at his home without incident.
Investigators have not said what led to the stabbing, if Mondesi knew the victim or what led police to believe he is the suspect.
Mondesi was charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon and third-degree possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes.
“As in every case, we are grateful for the collaboration with our partner law enforcement agencies who assisted our Office in locating and apprehending the suspect,” Prosecutor William Daniel said in a press release.
“And we hope that this arrest can bring some small measure of comfort to all those grieving Mr. Vasquez-Torres.”
