A New Jersey man is behind bars after police say he allegedly confessed to killing and decapitating his mother.

Around 4 p.m. on Dec. 8, officials received a 911 call from 46-year-old Jeffrey Surgent stating he “suffers from mental illness, and he just killed his mother,” according to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.

Police went to Surgent’s home in Ocean City and found Surgent and the body of his 74-year-old mother, Alexandri M. Surgent, officials said.

Surgent reportedly was not wearing any clothes and was atop his mother’s body in a hallway outside his apartment, according to court documents obtained by NJ.com. The elderly victim’s head was reportedly located a few feet from the rest of the victim's body.

Surgent allegedly started yelling and apologizing for killing his mother once police arrived, authorities said.

Officials obtained security footage from the apartment, which allegedly shows the woman’s head being thrown out of the apartment, police said.

Shortly after the head is thrown out of the apartment, a nude Surgent allegedly can be seen peeking out from the residence and then pulling his mother’s body into the hallway and laying on top of his mother until police arrived, court documents claim.

Police said investigators took into evidence a weapon and cellphone found at the scene.

Surgent faces charges of first-degree murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, officials said.

Surgent, who prosecutors said has a history of mental health issues, was transported to a medical facility. He is now being held at the Cape May County Jail without bond.
