A North Carolina woman has been arrested after a 21-month-old baby swallowed unidentified blue pills and died, according to authorities.

Shortly before 11 a.m. on Nov. 7, officers responded to a home in Gastonia regarding the cardiac arrest of an unresponsive 21-month-old, according to the Gastonia Police Department.

Officers started assisting with CPR efforts upon arriving at the scene, officials said, adding police determined the baby had swallowed several unidentified blue pills.

The infant was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Police took 24-year-old Rhonda McNair into custody and charged her with second-degree murder without regard, and felony neglect child abuse, officials said.

McNair was being held without bond in the Gaston County Jail.
