A 41-year-old man was gunned down while in his New York apartment and now police say a suspect has been charged with his murder.
Around 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 18, officers responded to a shooting in Watervliet, New York, according to the Watervliet Police Department.
Once authorities arrived, an officer was brought to the back of the apartment, where he found the victim. The person was later identified as 41-year-old Shaun T. Koonce and he had multiple gunshot wounds, police said.
The officer began life-saving efforts until emergency medical personnel arrived, authorities said. Koonce was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
Witnesses gave police a detailed description of the shooter and police said they found 48-year-old Reginald P. Goodman shortly after the shooting.
During the search, officers found the stolen, illegally-possessed 9mm handgun used to allegedly commit the murder.
Goodman was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said.
He was booked into the Albany County Correctional Facility without bail.
Investigators have not released what led to the shooting.
“The quick response, attention to detail and courageous actions of the officers led to a swift arrest of this defendant," Watervliet Police Chief Joseph Centanni said. "This offender demonstrated a callousness that has become a routine characteristic that accompanies these idiotic, violent, firearms-related offenses. We remain committed to working with our law enforcement partners and the community to tenaciously pursue and remove dangerous criminals from our neighborhoods.”
