A man in Ohio was sentenced in connection with rape of his girlfriend's now-10-year-old daughter, who got pregnant and traveled out of state to get an abortion, according to authorities.
Gerson Fuentes, 28, recently pleaded guilty to the charges against him in Franklin County Court and Judge Julie Lynch sentenced him to life in prison, NBC News reported.
According to the Indy Star, Fuentes must spend at least 25 years behind bars, which was part of the plea deal he made with prosecutors.
At the hearing, Judge Lynch said, “If the family hadn’t begged me to take this joint recommendation, this would never be happening.”
Judge Lynch added that sentencing the defendant to parole was a “very hard pill for this court to swallow,” according to NBC News.
Court records state the victim was 9 years old when Fuentes raped her twice. A DNA test was completed, which reportedly showed a 99.99% chance that Fuentes was the father of the victim’s child.

Fuentes, who was reportedly the victim’s mother’s boyfriend, is from Colombia and the Indy Star said he could be deported if he gets parole after 25 years. He must also register as a sex offender for life.
The victim traveled to Indiana for an abortion since Ohio banned the procedure after six weeks when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. The victim was six weeks and three days pregnant, officials said.
