A man in Oklahoma allegedly shot and killed his elderly mother and then told police it was assisted suicide, according to authorities.

Around 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 13, officers responded to a 911 call from 49-year-old Shane Smith regarding a shooting at an apartment in Oklahoma City, according to The Oklahoman.

Once at the scene, authorities found 76-year-old Connie Smith dead inside the apartment.

Shane reportedly confessed to killing his mother, according to officials.

He allegedly told police that it was part of a prearranged agreement he had with his mother to end her suffering by killing her if she became disabled by illness, The Oklahoman reported.

Shane was arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

Authorities said they are looking into the woman’s health condition leading up to the homicide and the investigation is ongoing.
