He shot one of his roommates and then shot the other one as he tried to help the former. Now, he'll spend four decades in prison.
According to KFOR, Patrick Mathews, 24, was sentenced to 40 years in prison last month. He was convicted of killing one roommate and injuring another.
News 9 Oklahoma City reported that Matthews, of Yukon, Oklahoma, first shot Jonathan Gonzalez-Leal during the incident. When Alfredo Vera, 24, attempted to help Gonzalez-Leal, Matthews shot him, killing him. Vera's girlfriend also witnessed the shootings.
“The second victim, identified as Alfredo Vera, tried to render aid to that first shooting victim,” Oklahoma City Sgt. Megan Morgan told News 9. “That’s when the suspect turned on him and shot him, ultimately killing him.”
Oklahoma City police were called to a home near Britton and Mustang Roads, where the three men shared a residence. When they arrived, they found a blood scene, according to News 9.

“When police arrived to the scene the suspect emerged from the front door of the house and shot himself,” Morgan told News 9.
Police have previously said it's unclear why Matthews turned violent against his roommates.
“He was trying to help somebody else from dying,” Alfredo’s sister, Zulema Vera, told KFOR. “He was trying to be brave."
“He didn’t even have time to react,” Zulema added.
Matthews pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon. According to News 9, Matthews attempted to take his life at some point before being taken to jail.
