REELZ: Mob Boss Sam Giancana Profiled in REELZ Crime Tell-All Doc
The latest episode of REELZ true crime series “Gangsters: America’s Most Evil” takes on the historic crime lord Sam Giancana, who was the boss of the Chicago Outfit in the 1960’s. Experts and former Feds weigh in on the ruthless criminal whom the series characterizes as “a street thug, a Mob triggerman and executioner.”
“Sam is gutsy, Sam is tough, Sam is smart, Sam has aspirations to be part of the outfit. You commit crimes, you prove your mettle, you earn and you kill, said series expert, Dr.Arthur Lurigio, Professor of Criminology at Loyola University.
Giancana’s career started when he became “wheelman” for Al Capone, the legendary leader of the Chicago Outfit, but had plans for mafia domination but to get there, the series says Giancana had to prove himself.
“You have to commit a murder, a contract murder on behalf of the family,” said former FBI Special Agent, Ross Rice.
The series reveals that Giancana was not only known for his violent acts, but also for his connections to political dynasties including the Kennedy family.
“Sam’s connections to the Kennedys came by way of Frank Sinatra,” added Lurigio.
“The evidence is that for a while JFK and Sam Giancana were sharing a girlfriend,” offered John Binder, author of "The Chicago Outfit."
But “Gangsters” says Giancana’s connections outside the Mafia didn’t stop with celebrities and politicians.
“Giancana gets involved in efforts to kill (Fidel)Castro with the CIA in Cuba,’” added Journalist, Gerald Posner. “If you were writing a movie about it you’d say ‘Oh come on they’re not gonna do that,’ but they did.”
