Roommate arrested for murder of college student found dead in her North Carolina apartment

A college student was found dead in her apartment, and authorities have arrested her roommate in connection to the crime.

On April 4, Raleigh Police Department officers were dispatched to do a welfare check. When they arrived, they discovered the body of Christina Maria Matos.

Matos had just turned 20 years old, but didn’t show up to her birthday party on Saturday, according to CBS 17.

Eric Gael Hernandez-Mendez, 20, was arrested for her murder. Matos’s brother and two friends confirmed to CBS 17 that Hernandez-Mendez and Matos were roommates.

Matos was previously a student at Wake Tech in North Carolina, but she wasn’t enrolled in any classes this semester, according to CBS 17. 

“Oh, she was a sweet young lady,” Jonathon Fleming, who was Matos’ boss at Jonathon’s Sports Lounge, told CBS 17. “Always cheerful when she came up in here. Good spirits.”

Friend Sydney Richardson added: “She was so funny and she loved her friends. She would do anything for anyone, she just had the highest heart. Genuine.”

Hernandez-Mendez has been transported to the Wake County Detention Center and charged with murder.
