‘Justice Is Inescapable’: Authorities Arrest Man Suspected Of Killing One, Injuring Another In North Carolina
A North Carolina suspect was arrested a day after a woman was fatally shot and a man injured, authorities said.
Around 5 a.m. on Nov. 7, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Kernersville Police Department responding to the report of a shooting in Kernersville found 55-year-old Paula Kay Self dead inside a residence and Quintonio Jacquezze Willis, 33, outside the home suffering a gunshot wound.
The injured man was rushed to an area hospital for treatment, and he’s expected to survive.
“After further investigation, investigators determined an altercation occurred inside the residence resulting in two individuals being shot and the suspect, who was known to the victims, subsequently fleeing the area,” the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators identified Derrick Jose Ward as the suspect in the case.
Authorities located Ward, 33, at a residence in Winston-Salem on Nov. 8 and took him into custody without incident.
Ward was charged with felony first-degree murder, felony firearm by felon, and felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office said.
He was being held without bond at the Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center.
"We are beyond grateful for our local and federal partnerships across the State of North Carolina,” Sheriff Bobby F. Kimbrough, Jr. said after Ward’s arrest. “There is no escape for the unjust. Justice is inescapable, especially when we stand together as one.”
