A man in Las Vegas has been arrested after police say he shot at a car carrying his girlfriend’s mother and brother 25 times, then claimed police wouldn’t “find anything because I’m too smart.”
Around 12:30 a.m. on July 5, a shooting incident occurred following a Fourth of July party at the home of 24-year-old Darius Higuera’s girlfriend’s family, according to court documents obtained by KLAS.
Police spoke with witnesses, who said Higuera had “an issue” with members of the family and the mother asked him to leave.
He refused and instead fought with another family member, who picked up a rock and hit him in the head with it, police said.
Police said Higuera became angry and showed his girlfriend a gun he had in his car, but she convinced him to leave.
After he left, he texted his girlfriend, “I should have killed them,” court documents allege.
Higuera did return to the home and stole a backpack belonging to his girlfriend’s brother before firing his gun twice at a family member who was chasing him, law enforcement officials said.
As Higuera was leaving, the brother and his mother got into their vehicle to chase him. During the pursuit, Higuera got out of his car and started shooting at their vehicle, the report states.
The girlfriend gave investigators a recording of a phone call with Higuera in which he allegedly told her he shot at her brother, according to police.
“He was following me in traffic, I just shot at his dumb a**,” Higuera said, court documents show.
He also said anyone that wanted to “call the police, they can, but they won’t find anything because I’m too smart.”

On July 30, Higuera was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder and 27 counts of discharging a gun at or into an occupied vehicle or structure, authorities said.
After his arrest, Higuera allegedly admitted to getting into a fight at the party, where he was hit on the head with a rock, but he declined to talk further without a lawyer, according to reports.
Higuera was booked into jail and was being held without bail. He is due back in court on Aug. 5.
