Woman suspected of fatally shooting husband almost seven years ago captured in Mexico, authorities say
A California woman suspected of murdering her husband almost seven years ago was captured in Mexico, authorities recently announced.
In May 2015, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department took a missing person report on Antoine Smith, 35, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“Friends and co-workers became increasingly concerned after they received text messages from Antoine’s cellphone number, which were not consistent with Antione’s messaging style,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies performing a wellbeing check at the Victorville home the missing man shared with his wife, Leticia Smith, found him dead from gunshot wounds.
Detectives named Leticia Smith a suspect in the murder and believed she fled to Mexico with the couple’s two daughters, who at the time were ages 8 and 4.
Last December, a cold case unit began to reinvestigate the murder and located the 40-year-old suspect living in Rosarita, Mexico.
On March 4, the U.S. Marshals Service working with Mexican authorities apprehended Leticia Smith and she was extradited to California, where she was being held in lieu of $2 million bail at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
The couple’s two daughters were found safe.
