Suspect in Custody After at Least 4 Victims Fatally Shot, Around 30 Injured in Georgia High School Shooting
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that one suspect is in custody following a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder.
Multiple agencies responded to a report of an active shooter at the school located about 45 miles northeast of Atlanta shortly before 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 4, according to the Barrow County Sheriff's Office.
CNN reported at least four people are believed to have been killed and approximately 30 more were injured in the shooting, although it’s unclear how many of the injuries are from gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement sources, noting the information is preliminary and subject to change.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed at around noon that one suspect was identified, but urged people to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
The suspect is of student age, but it’s unclear if the person actually attended the school, according to the sources.
"I have directed all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School and urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state," Gov. Brian Kemp said in a statement posted on social media. "We will continue to work with local, state and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation."
