South Carolina Teacher Accused of Offering Drugs and Alcohol to Teen Student in Front of Her Young Kids, Who Then Ratted Her Out

A former charter school teacher in South Carolina is facing charges for allegedly offering drugs and alcohol to a teenage student in view of her younger children, who reported her, police said.

Najla S. Clayton, 36, was charged with two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the City of Columbia Police Department.

She was released from the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.

According to police, the incident allegedly occurred during winter break between Dec. 22, 2023 and Jan. 7, 2024, while Clayton was employed at Clear Dot Charter School.

Clayton allegedly provided marijuana and tobacco to her 16-year-old male student, who was at her home, while in the presence of her two children, ages 6 and 11.

She also allegedly allowed her 11-year-old daughter to "smoke a tobacco product" and offered her marijuana, according to police.

Clayton's children described the incidents to a relative who then notified police.

The South Carolina Department of Social Services assisted CPD in its investigation.

Clayton is no longer employed by the school, though it's unclear when or how she left the job.
