A teenager in Mississippi will be tried as an adult after authorities say she fatally shot her school teacher mother and wounded her stepfather.
Around 5 p.m. on March 19, deputies were called to the scene in Rankin County and found the homeowner suffering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder, according to documents obtained by WAPT.
The man told authorities that he arrived home a few minutes earlier and found his wife, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, dead and his stepdaughter, 14-year-old Carly Madison Gregg, holding a handgun.
The homeowner claimed Gregg shot him but he was able to take the weapon away from her. He said she then ran into the backyard, jumped a fence and disappeared.
Deputies, with the help of a state patrol helicopter, were able to locate the girl not far from the house.
Gregg was arrested and taken to the Rankin County Juvenile Detention Center.
