Officers and emergency medical personnel responded to Gonzalez’s home after reports came in regarding a female being shot in the head, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by WSVN.

First responders located Gonzalez in front of her home suffering from a gunshot wound to the head, officials said. She was reportedly lying on top of her 1-month-old daughter, who was not harmed.

Authorities said Gonzalez was holding the newborn in her arms when she was shot.

Gonzalez was in critical condition and airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, where she succumbed to her injuries, police said.

According to an arrest report obtained by WPLG, one of Gonzalez’s neighbors told police they heard the suspect, 16-year-old Eli Zachary Shinhoster, say, “I’ll fire,” before allegedly pulling the trigger.

Officials said Gonzalez’s oldest daughter had dated Shinhoster for about nine months, but broke up with him about two months prior to her mother’s death.

Police obtained surveillance footage, which allegedly shows Shinhoster approaching Gonzalez’s home, pulling out a gun, shooting the weapon, and then fleeing on foot.

Multiple witnesses also identified him as the suspected shooter, the affidavit states.
