A woman intended to shoot and kill her boyfriend as he sat in a car. Instead, she murdered his 7-year-old son.

Now, she will remain behind bars for decades.

Recently, a jury in Hunt County, Texas, sentenced Brooke Ashley Craig to 30 years in prison for the shooting death of Kaden Green. The 7-year-old was shot and killed in December 2017, according to the Herald Banner.

Craig was initially charged with capital murder and later pleaded guilty to a murder charge. A jury sentenced her to three decades in prison after hearing arguments, according to the Herald Banner.

“She could have gotten life without parole,” Harris County District Attorney Nobel Walker said, according to the Quad City Times. “She must serve at least half of the sentence, 15 years, before she becomes eligible for parole. That doesn’t mean she will get parole, but she won’t be considered for parole until half of her prison sentence is served.”

Craig was a high-school athlete in Iowa before living in Texas, Quad City Times reported.

On the fateful night, Craig was in a fight with her boyfriend, Rafael Castillo, according to reports. She shot in the direction of his car, but the bullet hit the child. A witness took Kaden Green to the hospital. He later died from his injuries.

Both Craig and Castillo fled and were arrested more than 30 miles from the scene, according to reports.

Castillo was sentenced to eight years in prison on a drug charge and remains incarcerated. He still faces charges of tampering with evidence in connection to the shooting of his son.
