A Texas man got into an argument with others over money and roosters used in a cockfighting ring. Then he gunned down one of them with a rifle.
Now, Adrian Garcia, 31, will be going to prison for four decades. According to RGV News, Garcia recently admitted to fatally shooting Ezequiel Garza, of Mercedes, Texas, with a rifle on Aug. 18, 2019, over rooster fights.
Garcia appeared before 357th state District Judge Juan Magallanes in October, when he was sentenced to 40 years to a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.
Valley Central reported that witness statements "determined that Adrian Garcia intentionally killed Ezequiel Garza as the result of an argument over money that was bet on rooster fights," according to the Cameron County District Attorney's Office.
According to Valley Central, police were called for a report of a homicide in Harlingen on Aug. 18, 2019. Officers found Garza's body in a blue jeep parked in the driveway. The man was leaning forward toward the steering wheel with several gunshot wounds, according to the DA's office.
RGV News reported that former Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio stated that Garcia and Garza were drinking beer on Aug. 17, 2019, at a home located at 24811 Bass Boulevard at approximately 5:30 p.m. when the incident took place. Lucio said the men were fixing the roof at that residence and drinking beer with the owner, who went inside at approximately 11 p.m.
At approximately 5 a.m. the next morning, the owner heard gunshots and sent another worker out to see what had happened, according to RGV News. Lucio told the outlet that they then found Garza, who had been arguing with Garcia about whose rooster in the cockfighting ring was better.
