Texas Woman Committed 'Self-Induced Abortion,' Faces Murder Charge: Police
A Texas woman committed "self-induced abortion" and now is charged with murder, according to KIRO-TV.
Lizelle Herrera, 26, caused "the death of an individual by self-induced abortion." KIRO reports it's unclear if Herrera had an abortion or helped someone else get an abortion.
She was arrested April 7 and is in Starr County jail in Rio Grande City with $500,000 bond, KIRO reports.
“Herrera was arrested and served with an indictment on the charge of Murder after Herrera did then and there intentionally and knowingly cause the death of an individual by self-induced abortion,” sheriff's Maj. Carlos Delgado said in a statement.
Delgado didn't say what law violation Herrera is being held for. He said no other information will be available until at least Monday and that the case remains under investigation, according to KIRO.
Abortion rights group Frontera Fund called for Herrera release Saturday in Rio Grande City, KIRO reports.
“We don’t yet know all the details surrounding this tragic event," said Rockie Gonzales, founder and board chair of of the organization.
"What we do know is that criminalizing pregnant people’s choices or pregnancy outcomes, which the state of Texas has done, takes away people’s autonomy over their own bodies, and leaves them with no safe options when they choose not to become a parent,” Gonzalez said.
