A Texas woman was fatally shot this week and the man suspected of killing her returned to the scene of the crime and shot himself to death, according to authorities.
On June 26, Lesley Reyes, 19, was fatally shot during an “ambush attack” by her ex-boyfriend, 20-year-old Juan Carlos Mata, KHOU reported.
Pasadena Police Sgt. Raul Granados said Mata was waiting for Reyes when she got home from work. He then shot her twice and her parents rushed outside when hearing the gunshots and found her dead in the parking lot.
Mata was named the suspect in Reyes’ death after he was seen at the scene of the shooting on Monday, authorities said.
Granados said, “The suspect was still on scene and he was walking away. Our officers weren’t able to pursue him because they tended to the victim first and immediately noticed that she was deceased. By the time they tried to go after his location, he was already gone,” KHOU reported.
On June 29, police were alerted that a suspicious person, later identified as Mata, was at the apartment building where Reyes had lived with her parents, according to KHOU.

Mata was seen near a memorial for Reyes, but when police arrived, he walked behind a car, pulled out a shotgun and shot himself.
Lourdes Martinez, Reyes’ sister, said Mata and Reyes dated for about a year, but then broke up about a month ago, KHOU reported. Family members said Mata was “obsessed” with Reyes and their relationship had been “abusive” and “toxic.”
