Three members of the University of Virginia football team were killed, and two other people were hurt in a shooting, according to police and reports.
Police say they have taken the suspected shooter, Christopher Darnell Jones, into custody and he is charged with murder.
Jones was a member of the football team in 2018 but did not appear in any games.
The three people killed and two injured were on a bus returning from a field trip and arriving on the University of Virginia’s Charlottesville, Virginia, campus on Nov. 13.
Authorities identified the victims as Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis and D’Sean Perry. They were all members of the Cavaliers football team. Davis and Perry both appeared in games this year.
“As of this writing, I am heartbroken to report that the shooting has resulted in three fatalities; two additional victims were injured and are receiving medical care,” U-Va. President James E. Ryan wrote in a message to the community at about 4 a.m. “We are working closely with the families of the victims, and we will share additional detail as soon as we are able.
A motive has not been released in the shooting. Police quickly identified Jones as a suspect and a massive manhunt unfolded.
The shooting was reported around 10:30 p.m. and the university ordered a shelter in place. That order remained throughout the night.
