A mother stabbed her infant to death and left an 8-year-old in critical condition, police say.
A 10-month-old child died, and the 8-year-old remains in the hospital following the attack in Newport News, Virginia.
Around 9:30 p.m. on May 10, Newport News police got a call from a man who told them his fiancée was acting erratic, police Chief Steve Drew said at a media briefing provided by local media.
Officers located the children suffering multiple stab wounds in the apartment, Drew said. Police provided first aid, but the 10-month-old, identified as Zell Howard during the police briefing, died at the scene.
Drew said that when officers arrived, they described a “horrific” scene.
“The thing they saw, they’ll remember for the rest of their careers,” the chief said.
The father of the 10-month-old arrived at the scene and was interviewed by police. The 8-year-old’s father is currently in another state, according to police.
Police say officers have previously been called to the home for domestic and disorderly issues.
The children’s mother, Sarah Whitney Ganoe, 35, was arrested at the scene. Ganoe was charged with second-degree murder, malicious wounding and two counts of felony child neglect.
