Virginia man murdered during argument, suspect arrested, police said

A Newport News, Virginia man has been arrested after a man was killed in a parking lot — and his mugshot makes it look like he was shocked at the arrest.

Dion Jermaine McCallum, 42, was charged with second-degree murder for the incident, according to Newport News police.

Around 11 p.m. July 16, Newport News police responded to the 700 block of 17th Street in reference to an assault.

When officers arrived, they found a man, identified as Reginald Allen Stephenson, 59, outside of the home suffering from injuries, according to police. Stephenson was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation showed that Stephenson and McCallum got into an altercation that turned physical.

Investigators have not detailed how the victim died.

McCallum remained at the scene and was taken into custody. A mugshot provided by police showed a wide-eyed McCallum as he was booked on the murder charge.

Chief Steven Drew said in announcing the arrest that he would like to thank the quick response of the officers and the assistance by citizens in the neighborhood, which led to the arrest.

Police continue to investigate the homicide.
