A West Virginia mother has been indicted by a grand jury after she allegedly stabbed her 3-month-old daughter to death last year, according to authorities.

On Dec. 30, 2022, deputies responded to an apartment complex after receiving a call from a woman stating there was “blood all over," WCHS-TV reported.

At the scene, officers reportedly saw a woman “kneeling in front of the couch with a lifeless infant in her arms,” authorities said. Another adult woman was covered in blood nearby.

Police said they were able to locate a butcher knife.

One of the two woman, 32-year-old Krista Brunecz, and her child were transported to a nearby hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. Brunecz allegedly told officials that she “stabbed her baby and then herself,” WCHS-TV reported. When asked if she had intended to kill her baby and then herself, Brunencz responded “yes.”

Police noted that the 3-month-old victim’s clothes had “several holes in the shirt and chest area” that seemed to have been made by a knife.

An autopsy on the victim showed the little girl sustained wounds to her lungs and heart and died from “several stab wounds to the chest,” WCHS-TV reported.

According to court documents, Brunecz allegedly texted her mother a photo of herself with the victim, who had blood all over her body.

On July 10, the Lewis County Grand Jury convened and announced Brunecz was charged with one count of murder and one count of death of a child by parent, guardian or custodian or other person by child abuse, according to the Lewis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

Brunecz remains in custody at the Central Regional Jail.
